Emma Hockley 'Practice 5 - Pratyaahaara'
£175.00

Oil, watercolour, acrylic and spraypaint on board

30 x 30cm

These paintings were created by Emma Hockley to illustrate a book (soon to be published) in collaboration with Elena Jessup on Patañjali's eight limbs of Yoga, which are extracted from the Yogasuutras.

This text was composed in around 500BC by Patañjali, forming the basis of modern Yoga and meditative practices.

The purpose of this book is to give modern Yoga practitioners a ‘way in’ to the Yogasuutras. The use of art and words together can provide a more complete spiritual experience for the reader. Emma has transcribed the words into images for this purpose.

Yoga is the practice of concentration in order to transcend the limits of the sensory world. According to the text, the successful and disciplined practice of yoga brings the ‘light of wisdom,’ ‘happiness,’ and the ‘destruction of impurities’. The paintings become lighter and simpler as the stages progress to mirror this.
